Thursday 12th December - all OK

Just a few folk about. Someone had kindly collected litter in the area behind the little mosaic stone at the start of the reed bed path and left it hanging in a tree …

The path and river bank repairs look finished, and the broken post of the main river side gate into SPM has been replaced. Both gates are closed but not chained. The drop near the top end of the main boardwalk is more pronounced and may need attention in the new year …

storm Darragh update

Thanks @Lynne F for you report. I will try to pop round and see what I can do. I take it things aren't bad enough to close the site.

Well the bridge didnt take much sweeping and the fallers didnt put up much resistance. No chainsaw ( I'm not allowed one anyway)

Sunday 8th December - actions!

A few brave souls about.

Lots of twigs and branches on the paths. I cleared what I could but @Paul Hamilton and his chainsaw have some actions 🙂:

  • Small tree down on the western path between NW bridge and Red Bridge armrests.holds.drift
  • Red Bridge needs a sweep
  • Branch down at bottom end of boardwalk palace.fidgeted.mended

Bumped into a runner as I was leaving. He works in some sort of architectural/landscaping practice who want to do some work around access to urban trees and landscapes  (or something like that).  Has been charged with finding five projects.   They have funding!  Advised him to get in touch with Sam.  His name is Mark.

Saturday 7th December

Very quiet. Exciting to see the works going on. Plenty of litter but mostly blown in. Small branches everywhere, I cleared the larger ones,  but nothing major has come down.

5th December Winnall Moors 8.30am

Very quiet this morning in the Moors, one jogger. A couple of bits of rubbish in pond which I had no way of retrieving.  Getting wetter in parts and set to get worse I guess. First time I have seen Fire crests here. Work obviously started on top loop paths.

Wednesday 4th December

Very quiet - just three people walking round which included a couple visiting the Christmas Market and intrigued by the water vole trail. The orange net fence at the Itchen gate is intact. A good pile of gravel now just inside the Durngate gate waiting for a work  party.

Watched a red kite being mobbed by 4 crows at the northern end of SPM and heard a water rail in the reeds.

A fair bit of litter at the Durngate bench in particular and 2 drinks cans floating in the pond - unfortunately too far out for me to reach with a stick.

"new" picture

This just popped up on Facebook. "Heywood Sumner's first book (1881), starting on a wintry Winnall Moor. I remember skating in 1963. On the right could be the pond or reedbed"
